the jamaican sonia pottinger was once called “the most important jamaican woman involved in music business”. dancing down orange street is a collection of some of her famous productions for different artists. the album captures the moment when rocksteady transformed into reggae by speeding up a little and moving towards a more jerky and less smooth musical palette. famous singers as delano stewart and ken boothe are present on the album with multiple tracks. the vocal trio the melodians (known for their hit “rivers of babylon”) provide a couple of beautifull songs. even after all those years (released for the first time in 1969) the compilation remains a treasure of showcasing some of the finest songs produced by sonia. sonia pottinger was married to music producer lyndon pottinger and started to record musicians in 1996. during the late 60’s she produced songs for joe white, the melodians and toots & the maytals.

in the 80s, a nigerian dj named hycentto junior was notorious for making onitsha people dance on his grooves. soon, influenced by u.s hip-hop artists, he began rapping on top of the music he played. his eccentric style drew the attention of the biggest name, and the famous nkono teles decided to work with him on his next lp, mama groove. their project was released in 1991. due to unfortunate circumstances, the number of copies available was really low, making it very hard to find. more than 25 years later, working for a motor company, hycentto met online with french music passionate collective “lorem ipsum”, that had randomly found his mama groove lp. the result is a reissue auditioning all the 1991 mama groove’s tracks and two bonuses selected from his first 1984 album, at a party last night. the unique variety of sounds and genres, covering electro hip-hop, digi reggae and disco-funk, will carry you from poolside to late night dancefloors!

the heavy industrial crunch and rubbery synths of fraks trademark sounds come to hypercolour with the four track berga magic ep. the swedish techno trio have been active since the late 1980s, issuing cassette tapes (and later, vinyl) filled with blueprint techno and electronica on their own boerft records label. following in the footsteps of severed heads, d.a.f. and devo, frak have truly embraced performance art and experimental minimalism over the years, never compromising, always innovating. the berga magic ep comes brimming with raw analogue explorations and delightfully incongruous noise.

boris brenecki and darko kolar (aka katran) regroup as ontal for a horo ep that combines their instinctual brutality with a deeper probe into their penchant for experimentation. lead track ikari’s flickering storm unfurls a rhythmic rage that rolls over you like a turbo-charged synapse exciter. at its peak ikari feels as if it’s about to explode into shards of jagged, forged synthesis, but pulls itself back from the brink to reignite its hostile oscillation. r-amen bends the famous breakbeat over a concentrated twin-drop, peak-time 130bpm eruption, while vigilante is a punishing machine, built to instil palpable tension. in blinding form, headless horseman takes apart ikari and reconstructs it as a hyper half-step technoid stepper, complete with a guttural drop reminiscent of the more advanced strains of 170bpm music.
